Railway bridge over the Brenta river: the longest railway bridge in Italy

the construction project has been delivered: it is due to become the longest single-span railway bridge in Italy

The construction project for the doubling of the railway crossing of the Brenta river represents one of the most significant works within the implementation of the Veneto Regional Metropolitan Railway System (SFMR), as it deals with the completion of the double track configuration of the entire Padua – Castelfranco Veneto railway line, which is on an international freight corridor of primary importance: the Adriatic-Baltic.

Moreover, the new infrastructure designed by NET Engineering aims to eliminate the strong hydraulic critical issues of the existing bridge. To do this, it is essential to build the new deck at a higher elevation, connecting the new rails to the existing ones with as gentle as possible slopes, in order to maintain the performance of the line. Therefore, the design solution for the doubling is concerning a railway section about 1900 metres long.

However, beyond the functional characteristics of the project and its strategic importance, the railway bridge over the Brenta river has some features that make it a real record-breaking bridge.

With its 100 metres of free span, in fact, the bridge crossing the Brenta River will actually be the longest single-span railway bridge in Italy.

The structural typology is steel tied-arch bridge; tie bars between arch and deck are every 4 meters. The maximum height of the structure is 22.90 metres. The ‘corten’ steel structure will allow an adequate landscaping of the bridge, giving a homogeneous appearance to the whole work.

Finally, we would like to underline that, in addition to overcoming the limit of the overall length of the bridge, NET has also designed the construction phases in detail, in order to keep the railway line in operation during the whole duration of the works.
